Goals and Plans for 2010

I'm caving into the peer pressure and decided to blog about my goals (or "resolutions" if you prefer).  I don't usually make New Year's resolutions but, as always, I've been inspired by my Running Blogger Friends.


Health Goals
  • Eat more fruits and veggies... in fact, as of three days ago, I'm a vegetarian.  I'm going to go month-by-month on the whole vegetarian thing.  I'm trying it out to see if being a vegetarian makes me feel any different.  
  • Eat more raw foods
  • Drink at least 60 ounces of water everyday
  • Cut back on sugar
Training Goals
  • Ride and Run a total of 2010 combined miles
  • Strengthen my core, ankles & feet, and upper body
  • Join a running group
  • Run or cross-train five days a week
  • Get custom orthotics if current injury-eliminating endeavors don't work
 Personal Goals
  • Get clean laundry put away before the pile turns into Mt. Everest
I try to be realistic when I set goals.  I think all of those goals are do-able.  Well, OK... maybe not that last one.


San Diego Rock 'n' Roll 2010
It looks* as if the San Diego Rock 'n' Roll Marathon is now going to offer a half-marathon option.  If that is true, all I can say is: "WOO-HOO!"   I am not interested in doing another full marathon... at least not at this time... so I thought I was done with the SDRnR forever.  If the half is an option, I am 99% sure I will sign up.

*I'm confused because I received a flier from the race organizers that made it look as if they are offering a half.  There is also an ad in this months Runner's World and it says the same thing.  On the other hand, the Rock 'n' Roll website mentions nothing about a half and doesn't list it on the registration page.  What is up?!


Surf City Half Marathon
I am not ready for this one.  I should be much further along in my training but because of various set-backs, I'm not.  I really want to do this half but I'm trying to decide if pulling off another "barely finished" will be worth the expense of staying at a hotel for the weekend.  Guitar Hero and I were going to make a getaway weekend out of it and stay at one of the nicer hotels near the start.

I would still be all for having a getaway weekend, barely finishing, and just having fun... except our 15 year anniversary is a couple weeks later and I'd rather use the money to go somewhere more appealing (to us) than Huntington Beach.  I would feel differently if I knew I could do the race, give it my all, and still enjoy my time with my husband.

Basically, if I do this one, I'll pretty much be walking it just so I can get my cool surfboard medal and the long-sleeved tech shirt.  Those things aren't worth the $500+ we would have to spend for accommodations and food.

My other option is to drive up to the race early that morning, do the race, and drive home.  If anyone is planning to do the Surf City and is planning on driving up the morning of the race and wants to carpool, let me know.

San Diego is offering a 4 man relay team. . . . interested? I want a team :) I am trying to run at the high school track at 430 on weekdays (so kiddos can get some exercise too) You are welcome any time :)

I struggle with Laundry Mountain too, that's a big problem to go after....let me know if you have success!!

I think you have health/training in the right order. I'm starting to think fitness is 80% what you eat and 20% exercise. Good luck with your year!

nice goals! keep me posted on the vegetarian thing...that's big for a farm girl with 1/2 a side of beef in the freezer. I've done it before and felt great.

Did you see the artilce in Runners World about barefoot running!?!? I thought of you!

Happy New Year, Sara! just wanted to pass on some info on the San Diego RnR. The half marathon is only open to those participating thru Team in Training, Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. I was a participant last year and it was an AWESOME experience!! I raised almost $2000 for leukemia research and lots of support & training along the way :)

Ugh, I struggle with the laundry, too! It is not a mountain, but a never ending stream on socks and pants!

Nice goals! At least your laundry mountain is clean laundry. My dirty laundry hamper is currently overflowing...
Great goals. I like the laundry one. I'd use it but fail. I almost always have a mountain in my livingroom.

I sit here and read your blog, looking at my Mt. Everest pile of folded, yet not put away, clothes. Why is it sooooo hard?? Err.

I don't live in CA (but wish I did) but heard Surf City sold out...I think it sells quickly. One day I'd love to do that one!

Interestingly I should have the same personal goal... but am SO NOT READY for it! I'm terrible at putting away clean clothes! Good luck with the vegetarian thing, I'd be interested in hearing how you feel along the way!

Loved having the combined goal for 2009, I did the same for 2010! Here's to hoping you kick 2010's butt! :)

Bwahahahaha about the clean clothes (that is my goal for the day...to get the mountain put away...sigh).

I am in the same boat Sara...sooooo not ready for Surf City (and not even sure my foot will be able to withstand it). I HATE paying for a race and not running it though. In any event if I am able to go, it'll be a run/walk race for me.

I'll keep you posted on our plans. Not sure if the herd is driving in the morning or the day before (we have no plan as of yet). If we go up in the morning, you are certainly welcome to drive up with us!

Also...I saw the ad in Runners World about the SDRnR 1/2 marathon too, and checked the website (where there's no mention of it). but I've been hearing other buzz that they're going to offer a 1/2 to all this year. In any event, I don't think the add in RW is referencing the TnT 1/2 marathon though...they've never advertised SDRnR as a 1/2 marathon race, so why do it this year? hmmmm.

Great goals! I like the creativity with the 2010 mile goal. Very cool. I've never found the RnR websites to be overally helpful, they aren't very quick to update them either! Ryan and I will be out there for the 2011 SD RnR if all goes as planned! Can't wait! Good luck!!

I just found your blog to! Happy New Year, sound like great goals and races for 2010. My problem is remembering to take the laundry out of the dryer. I keep thinking I have lost stuff ... and it's been in the dryer for 3 days.

love your goals mostly the last one. I do the same thing, excpet then i throw the dirty laundry on top and then i get confused and don't know what's clean and what's dirty so i have to wash it all. lol vicious cycle.

Those are great goals, Sara. Some already have mentioned it, but the RnR has for years offered a half marathon option only to Team in Training runners. Before this year's course change, it was located along Friar's Road not too far up from Fashion Valley Mall. Would be wonderful if it opened to others, wouldn't it? The relay is a fun way to enjoy a marathon too.

What? Huntington Beach is not romantic enough? Well then, you haven't seen the video I took last weekend.

Sarcasm over. I think after your SD RnR experiece you have the right perspective about Surf City. Surf City will alwas be there - 15 year anniversaries not so. Besides - you can probably sell your bib!
