A Change in Focus

Whine, Anyone?

I haven't blogged for a few days. There just has not been much to blog about... unless you want to read my whining about my knee/leg. That's right, it hurts again still. I haven't been able to run or even do serious walking because of it. I am finding myself feeling depressed and sorry for myself. See? Aren't you glad I haven't been blogging?

What's Next?

My doctor decided to refer me to a specialist. He's hoping the insurance will OK me seeing an orthopedic specialist but thinks they'll want me to see a physical therapist first. I don't know what the difference in approach is between the specialties. I just want to be able to run pain-free again.

"Walk & Woll" Marwathon

That's what my 4 year old calls the Rock & Roll Marathon (San Diego). Well, he has part of it right... I decided to change my focus for the marathon. I'm going to start training to walk it. I would rather run/walk it but since I'm not sure I'll be able to do that, I need to prepare myself to walk the 26.2 miles. So, I'm back to giving my leg a rest and hoping to be able to spend the remaining days training with the walkers in my group. I have almost two months before the marathon so I'm thinking positively that I'll be ready to walk it.

Future Goals

I plan to run 30 marathons in the year 2010.

Don't worry... I'm just kidding!

Not long after starting this training, I decided that half-marathons are probably more my style. I had already paid for the Rock & Roll (SD has no half for this race) so I'm determined to do it! Plus, I really want my shirt and finisher's medal.

After my leg is all better, I'll be looking for some fun half-marathons to run in. I'll also take a more gradual, casual approach to training for HMs and just have fun running again!

Peanut

In an unrelated topic, we got a kitty cat!! It took a lot of convincing, but my husband finally agreed that a pet would be nice.

Side Note:

This was a huge step for him... when we first got married, we had the cat from hell. We kept her because we knew nobody else would be stupid enough to take her. We had her until she passed on due to old-age and numerous health issues, including diabetes and obesity (we didn't make her fat... she came to us that way). She was such a mean-spirited, moody, annoying cat that she ruined cat ownership for us for years after that.

Our boys have never had a pet. Well, we did have a Beta fish for a while but those don't count. My husband is not a fan of dogs so we decided on a cat. I found him on Craigslist... he was being abandoned during a boyfriend/girlfriend break up.

This is Peanut

We love him, already! He's about 4-5 months old. His breed is Russian Blue (or partly). He's playful and sweet. He hasn't scratched or bitten the kids (yet). He hasn't clawed the heck out of the couch. He does his "business" in the litter box. So far, there have been no kitten-sized fur balls barfed up. He doesn't meow at us when we eat, sleep, go to the bathroom, breath. He still has his "man-hood"... but we're taking care of that little issue next week. Snip-snip

Brownie-Mania

I found an easy, delicious brownie recipe. I wish I hadn't found it. I make them & I eat them. Why do I want to eat like crap when I can't get out and run??? Does this happen to you?

Bummer on the knee! Hope you can figure it out and get it healed soon. Good luck with walking the marathon.

I'm a big fan of the 10 mile to half marathon distance races. They are a bit easier on the body.

Cute Kitty!

Sux about the knee...I came to the same conclusion about 1/2 marathons having run one. They're more my speed/style/ability.

I have no idea what the difference is between the two (an orthopedic specialist or a PT). I think the important thing is to see someone who works with athletes, and if you can get it, someone who works with runners.
Walking or running the marathon doesn't really matter. As long as 1) you complete it before the allotted time; 2) You get a cool shirt for competing; and 3) Hopefully you get some cool "bling" after you complete it! Perhaps I can introduce your knee to my heel since they both have something in common!! Keep smiling, and good luck with whatever doctor you see.

I had all kinds of knee drama last year, emaill me if you want the whole story or more info.

anyway, i went to an orthopedic who also referred me to a PT. The orthopedic diagnosed my knee and gave me some injections. The PT used exercise therapy (and ice and a few other things) to fix the underlying cause (muscle imbalance). It definately helps to have someone who works with athletes or at least is sympathetic to your ambitions.

Givne your knee issues - it is a GREAT idea to plan to walk it. Running on a bad knee only worsened my problem. Had to fix it first, and now I'm running again (pain free, I might add!!)
April fools!! I read the 30 Marathons thing and I though "How in the Monkey (I use Monkey instead of swearing) is she going to do that?"

Good luck with your knee!!! My knee has been holding up well so far from an ACL tear in 2001, I am still torn between full and 1/2 Marathon.

YES!! I eat like a PIG! I have never craved chocolate and hamburgers so much in my life. Thank goodness running burns calories.

Your post makes me want to get a bottle of wine on my way home. YUM!!

Ugh-- you're allowed to whine to us. But walking is a great option and so much easier on the knee.

Your new cat is beautiful-- and, of course I do the same thing with brownies. I think partially that when I'm bored I like to bake...if only I were entertained by making salads or roasting veggies!

That's a beautiful cat!

Re: your knee - stick to your guns. An ortho can/will give an accurate diagnosis. You should argue that without the accurate diagnosis, PT could do more damage - requiring longer recovery and the possibility of surgery. I'd give it a try!

Peanut is gorgeous!

Sorry to hear the knee's still giving you problems. If you do end up seeing a physical therapist first, hopefully they can recommend exercises to strengthen/make the pain go away.

Nuts! I'm sorry the knee is still being difficult.

On the food thing -- yes, I eat every super fattening, unhealthy thing I can get my hands on when I'm on the DL. You're not alone!

Hang in there. I know how frustrating injuries can be when you really want to run. Give it some rest time, maybe cross train and I'm sure the little super cute kitty will need some attention!
